As schools begin to open to more children, many of us will be feeling anxious and confused. So how do we prepare ourselves and our children?
All of us have gone through the most unusual, challenging, and unprecedented events in living memory
The coronavirus outbreak and lockdown has affected us all. Not least in terms of our mental health- leading to increased levels of anxiety and stress.
And now it is time for another big change- the return to school for some of our children. Here are some ideas for how best to cope:
Be Calm
Children often take their cue from our emotions and behaviour, so if we can remain calm, positive and matter of fact, they will too.
Be Supportive
Remind your child of the many ways that they have learnt to keep themselves safe such as washing hands and social distancing. Reassure them It may help for them to have a small object or a picture to keep in their pockets to feel or look at when they are feeling anxious or missing you.
Be Prepared
Help your child to focus on things that they are looking forward to such as seeing their friends and teachers. Talk with your child about the changes they may encounter both in the classroom and playground and practise any new routines to ease the return to school
Listen
Give time and space for your children to talk about their feelings and concerns. We don’t have all the answers, but we can give them reassurance and the confidence to adjust to the ‘new normal’
For many of our children this will be a time of deep disappointment that they will be unable to return to school to see their friends and teachers. The best support we can give as parents is to validate their feelings and help them take comfort from the fact that they are not alone.
In the long term, your child is more likely to remember how you responded to their emotions and will appreciate the effort that you made to help make it better. Whilst we cannot fix this problem, it will help to just be a listening ear to help your child freely vent their frustration.
